Trademark Classes – What it is?
Trademark classes have been created to categorize products and services into certain groups. When you apply for trademark registration, the trademark classes provide you guidance on the categorization of the product or service. Since for a product or service, you can only apply in one of the trademark classes, you must know what the trademark classes are and which class describes your product or service more precisely. Once you are done with classification, you can file your application.
The trademark classes for goods and services in Pakistan are based on international classification (NICE).
Number of Trademark Classes
According to NICE classification, goods, and services have been categorized into 45 trademark classes. There are 34 trademark classes for goods/products and 11 trademark classes describe the services.
Importance of Trademark Classes
If you are willing to register your trademark for a product or service, learning about trademark classes will be important for you. Every product or service is of a particular category. If you don’t know about the trademark classes, you will not be able to categorize your product or service. Even without knowing trademark classes, you will not be able to conduct a trademark search which is an exercise to know if your trademark is registerable or now. If you don’t know which class your product or service belongs to, your trademark search will bring you accurate information.
How to Use Trademark Classes in Trademark Application
If you are applying to register a trademark for a product or service, you must refer to the trademark classes (mentioned below) and check which class most precisely describes your product or service. However, there’s a possibility that your product or service may fall in more than one trademark class. If you think that more than one trademark class appropriately describes your product or service, you should register your trademark in all the relevant classes. Though applying in multiple trademark classes cost you some extra money but its benefits would be manifold so never compromise on that.
